Forasters
Self-published Die-cut softcover. 220 × 270 mm 112 pages, full color Spanish / English ISBN: 978-84-0969241-5 Forasters is a photobook by artist Marijo Ribas that emerges from a personal investigation into the concept of foraster (outsider) in Mallorca. Through an analysis of her own family history, the project seeks to redefine and semantically reclaim a term traditionally used in a pejorative way. The publication was awarded a Creation Grant from the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics (IEB) in 2023, in the category of photography and video.
Marijo Ribas is a visual artist, researcher, and graphic designer. Her practice critically reflects on the representation of class and gender relations, identity geopolitics, and the preservation or exploitation of territory. Working from a multidisciplinary perspective—particularly through photography, video, and installation—she constructs scenes that embody a complex conceptual framework.
El concepte de foraster a Mallorca és comparable al de charnego a Catalunya o maqueto al País Basc. El meu objectiu és redefinir aquest terme i dur a terme un procés d’ennobliment semàntic a partir de la meva pròpia història familiar.
La paraula foraster fa referència als treballadors estacionals procedents de la península que van arribar a les Illes Balears durant el període de desenvolupament econòmic de la darrera etapa del règim franquista, coincidint amb el boom turístic. Les primeres onades migratòries estaven formades per jornalers agrícoles que treballaven a les illes en la collita de l’ametlla i la garrova, emprant tècniques molt similars a les de la collita de l’oliva, principal mitjà de subsistència al nord d’Andalusia —Jaén, la terra de la meva mare.
